Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Walls that hold the ground back for decades — not until the next wet winter.

Overview

Retaining Walls Done Properly

A retaining wall is a structural element, not a garden feature. It is holding tonnes of saturated soil, and when it fails it fails all at once. We build every wall around three things: footing depth, post strength and drainage behind the face.

We use galvanised steel H-posts set in concrete footings sized to the wall height, concrete sleepers or treated hardwood, and a drainage layer with an agg line running to a legal discharge point.

What's Included

  • Site levels, soil check and set-out before any digging
  • Concrete footings sized to wall height and surcharge load
  • Galvanised steel H-posts or treated hardwood posts
  • Concrete sleeper or treated timber infill panels
  • Drainage aggregate and slotted agg pipe behind the full wall
  • Engineering documentation for walls over one metre where required
  • Backfill, compaction and site clean-up

Retaining Walls — Common Questions

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?+

Generally walls under one metre and clear of boundaries and easements don't need a permit, but councils differ. Anything over a metre, near a boundary or carrying a surcharge usually needs engineering and approval. We tell you where you stand at the site visit.

Why do retaining walls lean or bow?+

Almost always drainage or footings. Water builds pressure behind the wall with nowhere to go, or the footings were dug too shallow to resist the load. Both are hidden once the job is finished, which is why cheap walls look fine for two years.
